A 7-7 team wins the whole thing

Matt Stockbridge went 7-7. He was outscored by sixty-three points across the season. He got the seven seed. He won the championship.

It is the strangest title in league history and it is not particularly close. One other champion has won without a winning record, and one has won while being outscored on the year. Stockbridge is the only one who did both at the same time. He beat the two seed, the three seed and the four seed to do it.

The top of the bracket collapsed in a single afternoon. Cam Ford had gone 11-3 with 1,400.8 points and lost his quarterfinal 94.6 to 67.7 โ€” Josh Allen gave him 20.8, Nick Chubb 15.3, and the other seven starters produced 31.6 between them. Roddy Tobin, the eight seed at 6-8, beat him. In the same round Joe Hegarty, 10-4 with 1,452.8 points, the most in the league, lost to Stockbridge 111.4 to 101.6. Both byes-worth of team were gone before the semifinals.

Stockbridge's run was Aaron Rodgers and a lot of nerve: 23.7 in the quarterfinal, 19.9 in the semifinal, 20.2 in the final, part of 316.8 on the season. He beat Drew Cakouros 86.6 to 81.1 and then Ben Catudal 97.2 to 87.4. None of those three wins reached 112 points. He never needed a big week; he just needed the other guy not to have one either.

Catudal, the four seed, got there on Jalen Hurts and Devin Singletary and lost the final with Justin Jefferson scoring 5.8 and Tyreek Hill 4.2.

The season's defining beating happened in the consolation bracket, which is where the league puts its best material. JJ Sellon scored 158.3 against Ricky Robinson's 59.9 in week sixteen โ€” 98.4 points, the biggest margin in MFFL history. The next week Sellon scored 30.6, the lowest score of the entire season, and lost to Brady Vrettas, who managed 35.5. Robinson finished twelfth anyway. Ja'Marr Chase gave him 44.6 in that final week, the afternoon he went for 266 yards in Kansas City, and it was worth nothing at all.

KJ Beckett went 3-11. Jonathan Taylor scored 50.4 for Joe Hegarty in week eleven, the year's best single performance, in a season that ended with Hegarty finishing eighth.
